Denim Trends: buh bye Muffin Top

Published by ocymvio at 12:44 pm under Trend Edit This

If you don’t know the term ‘Muffin’, you undoubtedly have seen it.  This is when a person wears pants or a skirt that is too tight, and the excess flesh spills over the top of the garment resembling the shape of a muffin.  This has been going on for so long I thought the trend would never end.  I never understood it.  Even though I’m 95% gay, I know when a woman looks hot, and couldn’t imagine any straight or bi man finding this attractive.  Low rise jeans on a thin person does look hot.  Showing off your lower back tattoo or thong on a thin person is hot.  Even if you have a normal amount of body fat, doing these things in garments that fit correctly is hot.  Do not misunderstand these comments as someone that thinks people should strive towards having 10% body fat or less.  I adore big women and have designed for them.  The irony is that they usually don’t fall into this category because they know it doesn’t work.  The people I’m talking about are the women and girls that are size 8 and above, with a normal amount of body fat for a non athlete, squeezing into jeans that are a size too small.  Just because you can button the jeans, does not mean they fit, and with low rise jeans, all the excess body fat near their waist spills upward and outward.  All this being said, more and more companies are beginning to get away from low rise jeans.  Unfortunately there are still a number of companies pushing the Shinny Fit.  For those that are considering this garment, do us all a favor, if you are not a size 6 or smaller, either go to the gym or buy the correct size.  Muffin Top is not attractive.   Muffin top   Wide LegWhile jeans may not seem very complicated, getting the right fashion forward fit depends on several measurements.  Denim is moving toward wide leg jeans.  To put things in perspective, an untapered straight leg jean bottom opening is approximately 15″ - 16″.  Wide leg jeans will vary, but look for 21″ leg openings or larger.  The second measurement is at the knee.  A more traditional Boot Cut, is fitted at the thigh and knee and then will flare out to about 17″ - 18″.  Some companies that want to save money on fabric costs are opting for this.  This however is only hinting at the trend.  The trend is a wide at the knee and wide at the bottom.  Some companies will opt to give room at the thigh, while others are making it more of a flare.  Whatever you decide to wear, this is perfect for heels.  While many men may want to see women in stiletto heels, this is more about height and any heel will do.  If you’re not used to walking in heels, get a fashionable boot with at least a 3″ heel.   men’s vintage   Destruction and/or AntiquingWhile there was a hint on destruction in the past few years, the trend that’s coming is skin revealing destructed jeans.  As warmer weather moves in this spring and summer, do not be surprised to see butt cheeks or the latest underwear trends.  So before you go out and spend $200 on these jeans, let’s talk about the concept.  Up until the 1980’s, you didn’t have a lot of choices in denim.  You basically had the option of washed or unwashed (rigid) jeans in a limited number of colors.  A person would have there ultimate favorite jeans that they wore over and over again.  Over the course of years, not fashion seasons, the jeans would begin to deteriorate.  This being said, one of the trends is toward dark or rigid jeans with minimal washing. Buy a pair and wear them every weekend while you are doing chores.  Buy them now, so that when you are shoveling snow, the salt that is melting the ice and snow will get on your jeans.  Wear them to a muddy park in March and April.  Go jump in a river or lake when it’s warmer and then let the Sun dry them.  These are not the latest fashion jeans you own, but is your favorite one.  The point is, that after years of doing this, they will have natural whiskering, be worn in certain areas, ripped in other and faded with time.  This is what designers are currently trying to emulate.Antiquing is more about the color.  This will be browns and possibly reds.  Traditionally antique browns came from soaking garments in tea.  The trend however is to soak your jeans in espresso.  I say reds, because in the Southwest and some other places, you have red clay soil.  While I haven’t seen examples of this, it’s more of a premonition.  You can search youtube or other sites on how to destruct or antique your jeans.  One that I found on dyeing is from Thread Bangerhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEnph0HHs1UAnother I found on destructing is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKY7AwWZybQ   Ripped Jeans   The last item I’ll comment on related to demim is ‘Emo’According to Wikipedia, this music genre has been around since 1985 and currently is on it’s third incarnation.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EmoIn this article it defines the fashion as, “Today emo is commonly tied to both music and fashion as well as an inspiration toward the emo subculture, and the term “emo” is sometimes stereotyped with tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) brushed to one side of the face or over one or both eyes, dyed black, straight hair, tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands (or other designer shirts), studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad.  Early on, emo fashion was associated with a clean cut look but as the style spread to younger teenagers, the style has become darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour black replacing sweater vests.  In recent years the popular media have associated emo with a stereotype that includes being emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden. It is also associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide.”    emo   What is interesting is that recently I saw a South Park episode that makes a parody of this trend.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_UngroundableBasically the Goth kids, see that everyone is starting to dress like them, but are calling themselves Vampires.  Perhaps this has to do with the popularity of the HBO series “True Blood’ or book made into movie “Twilight”, but there is definitely a vampire subculture happening.  Again. This is translating into what the 80’s identified as Punk Rock.  So, tight black jeans and tight tee shirts with vibrant graphics are a trend.  Don’t forget the black hair dye.   Until next time,  Gary Suto  Creating your future, one dress at a time

A friend of mine that grew up in Arkansas emailed me the following comment: The secret to getting that brown color naturally is to wash them in well water from a well that has high iron content. The rust in the water will make the pants brown. It will also turn your socks and underwear orange. That’s the good drinking water too. Even my friends from next door would never drink our water.

I so feel you on the muffin tops! There are other clothing articles or other denim cuts that can make these muffin tops “disappear” and look fabulous!

I’m a size 12-13 and I don’t mind it at all, but any muffin top effects from pants is totally annoying. Sometimes i can’t avoid it for need of a belt and it’s almost as bad as nails on a black board.
